The name has Turkish origins, dating back to the period of Turkish rule on the island, and it means “devilish” (Devil’s/Haunted Harbors). This designation is due to the dangerous sea conditions in the area. The location is also referred to as “Agios Raphael,” named after the church located at the starting point of the gorge, and as “Agios Spyridonas” from the old chapel built within the rocks. The beach has a mix of pebbles and sand and, due to its challenging location, has gained popularity in recent years as a well-known and beloved destination.
